The Lower Red Lion - St Albans
Whether you would like to spend the evening sampling real English ale in the cosy bar...or would like to sleep within the shadow of the great Cathedral and wake up to a traditional home-cooked breakfast... the Lower Red Lion offers you the chance to step back to a time when the local inn was the focal point of the community.
No Music, no TV and a selection of 6 real ales and cider. The Lower Red Lion has been included in Roger Protz favourite 25 pubs in Britain, high praise indeed. The pub has been featured in Foyle’s War. The Lower Red Lion pub in Fishpool Street, St Albans, was featured on ITV's wartime detective drama Foyle's War. Producers of the programme, which stars Michael Kitchen, liked the pub's unique name so much they rewrote the script. In the original script the pub was called The Queen's Head but they liked our sign so much they changed the name. What one customer said recently “I cannot remember if I had ever been here before. The other evening I had met up with some friends who live nearby and we popped in here. It was very quiet and for a change I felt the youngest person in the pub rather than one of the oldest. Anyway the staff and customers were all very pleasant. But the highlight of this pub is the beers! There was quite a selection on tap, many from local breweries. I tried three and all were well kept – the Tring Brewery offering (sorry forget which one) being particularly pleasant. This is a great pub and I will be back as soon as I can.”
